Abstract

This study examines the distortion in the understanding of the concept of zuhd (asceticism)، which in some Sufi and practical circles tends toward extreme asceticism or arduous self-mortification (riyadhah)، potentially leading to a form of ingratitude for divine blessings (kufr al-ni'mah) and a contradiction of human nature (fitrah). The study aims to uncover Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah’s reformist vision in reconstructing the meaning of zuhd through his seminal work، Madarij al-Salikin، and to clarify the distinction between Sharia compliant zuhd based on prophetic adherence (ittiba') and innovated zuhd based on extremism. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method by examining Ibn Qayyim’s texts and analyzing his rational and prophetic arguments. The research concludes that for Ibn Qayyim، zuhd is an act of the heartcharacterized by removing worldly attachment from the heart rather than physical deprivation and that enjoying lawful blessings with the intention of gratitude (shukr) does not contradict zuhd but is rather the essence of prophetic guidance. The significance of this research lies in providing a model of zuhd characterized by Shariabased rationality، making it applicable within the contemporary Islamic context without neglecting the requirements of material life.
